Border Fleet Services

The Vedder Transportation Group's commercial on road carriers are comprised of Vedder Transport and CanAm West Trucking. The group operates on road equipment throughout the United States and Canada. In late 2003 the group was having challenges maintaining their 400 power units and 800 trailers. The president of the group directed the vice-president of CanAm West Trucking to undertake the creation of a repair and management facility. The location was in Abbotsford, in British Columbia.

Border Fleet Services was the name chosen for the new company. In early 2004 the repair facility was struggling to meet the needs of the transportation group. The vice-president of CanAm West trucking engaged KelRoy Solutions to perform a review of Border Fleet's policies and procedures. The vice-president also assumed leadership of Vedder Trucking shortly after engaging KelRoy Solutions.

KelRoy Solutions reorganized Border Fleet Services to meet and exceed the needs of the Vedder Transport Group. Some of the accomplishments achieved by KelRoy Solutions Management:

• Reduction in annual maintenance spend by the transportation companies of $4m over 5 years.
• Profitability targets met as directed by the vice-president.
• Technician productivity increases in the Abbotsford repair center of 33%.
• Reduction in power unit downtime by 32%. Reduction in trailing unit downtime by 28%.
• Successful application to the federal government "ecoFreight" rebate program for $1m in funding.
• Successful application to the provincial government "Green Fleets" program for $100k in funding.
• Implementation of an enterprise Computerized Maintenance Management System including payroll, finance and equipment status functionalities.
• Reduction in lost time due to injury by Abbotsford maintenance staff of 42%.
• Creation and coordination of training programs for drivers and maintenance staff for new employees, technical training and compliance with the NSC and CVSE.
• Establishment of a preferred vendor maintenance network throughout United States and Canada.
